A wet belt is a cambelt that runs inside the engine, soaked in oil, instead of behind a dry plastic cover. Car makers moved to them to save fuel, and on a handful of very common engines it's turned into one of the most expensive things that can quietly go wrong on a used car.
The question that actually matters when you're looking at an advert isn't whether wet belts are a bad idea. It's whether the specific car in front of you has one, and whether anybody has changed it.
Which cars have a wet belt?
In the UK you're most likely to meet one in five engines, and between them they cover a lot of the cheap end of the classifieds.

Those intervals and repair figures come from our own service-interval and known-faults databases, which hold 265 confirmed intervals and 736 documented faults across 41 makes. Wet belts account for 14 of the intervals and 7 of the faults.
The 1.1 Ti-VCT deserves a flag rather than a figure. It's the engine most buyers don't realise uses a wet belt, because it's the non-turbo entry-level Fiesta that people buy precisely to avoid complication. We hold it as a wet belt with lower confidence than the other four, so treat it as "check this one specifically" rather than a settled fact.

It's a rubber toothed belt that drives the engine's timing, exactly like a conventional cambelt, except it sits inside the engine and runs submerged in oil. That lets it also drive the oil pump, and it cuts friction slightly, which is where the fuel saving comes from.
The problem isn't that it snaps. It's how it ages. A dry cambelt wears. A wet belt degrades, shedding material into the oil it's sitting in. That debris travels to the oil pickup strainer and blocks it. Once the strainer is blocked the engine is being starved of oil while the dashboard still looks perfectly normal, and what fails next is usually the bottom end rather than the belt.
That's the bit worth understanding, because it changes what you're looking for. A conventional cambelt that's overdue is a gamble on a component. A wet belt that's overdue has potentially already been depositing debris into the oil system for years, and the damage doesn't undo itself when the belt is finally replaced.
How do I tell if the advert's car has one?
The advert almost never says. You work it out from the engine, not the model, and that's the step most buyers skip.
Start with the exact engine badge and capacity. "Corsa 1.2" is not enough on its own, because Vauxhall sold a 1.2 that predates the Stellantis takeover and a 1.2 PureTech afterwards, and only one of them has a wet belt. Same trap on the Fiesta, where the 1.0 EcoBoost and the 1.1 Ti-VCT sit next to each other in the same listings at similar money.
Three things pin it down:
- The engine in the V5C and the advert text. Capacity plus the badge name, not just the number. 1199cc and "PureTech" together is the PSA wet belt engine.
- The year. Our fault data flags the Peugeot 208 1.2 PureTech from 2014 to 2019, the Citroen C3 from 2016 to 2022, the Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 PureTech from 2019 to 2023, the Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost from 2011 to 2018, the Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost from 2017 to 2020, the Honda Civic 1.0 VTEC Turbo from 2017 to 2022, and the Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue from 2016 to 2023.
- The model pages. A year range is a starting point, not an answer. Engines change mid-generation and cars get built before they're registered, so a car at the edge of a range needs checking rather than assuming.
When is it due, and why are so many cars already overdue?
This is the part that catches people out, and it's the strongest reason to care about this before you buy rather than after.
Both Ford and PSA shortened their wet belt intervals after the failures started appearing, and they shortened them a lot.

A 2018 car sold in 2026 is eight years old. Under the original schedule it wasn't due. Under the revised one it went past due two years ago. Plenty of those cars have had a full, honest-looking service history the whole way and still never had the belt done, because nobody told the owner the number had moved.
So "full service history" doesn't answer this question. Only "the belt was changed, here's the invoice" answers it.
What does the job cost?
On the PSA 1.2 PureTech, £800 to £1,500 is the range our data holds for the belt job itself. On the Ford engines it's higher, £1,000 to £4,000 on the 1.0 EcoBoost and £2,000 to £6,000 on the 2.0 EcoBlue, because there's more to come apart and because the oil pump and strainer often need doing at the same time.
The spread in those numbers is the whole story. The low end is a belt change on an engine caught in time. The high end is a belt change plus the consequences of one that wasn't, and on a car worth £5,000 that's the point where people weigh up scrapping it.
Which is why this is a negotiation lever rather than only a walk-away signal. An overdue wet belt on an otherwise sound car is a known, quotable cost, and it's a fair thing to put to a seller who hasn't had it done.
Which of these gaps can a check actually close?
Start with what a check can't do, because it's the honest framing. Nothing we run will tell you the physical condition of a belt sitting inside an engine. Nobody can, short of taking it apart. No provenance provider holds that record either, and any check that implies otherwise is overselling.
What's knowable is everything around it, and that turns out to be most of the decision:

The difference is what gets read alongside them. A plate lookup has never seen the advert. The short version
Wet belts aren't a reason to avoid a whole class of car. Millions of these engines are running fine, and a wet belt that's been changed on schedule is just a serviced car.
The trap is narrower than that, and it's specific: a common engine, an interval that got shortened after most owners stopped paying attention, and a failure mode that damages the engine rather than just stopping it. Identify the engine, check the date against the revised interval rather than the original one, and ask for the invoice. That's the whole job.
