The nylon coolant degas hose goes brittle with heat cycling and cracks or snaps, often at speed. The 1.0 EcoBoost carries very little coolant and runs high thermal loads, so it can empty in seconds and warp the alloy cylinder head before the temperature gauge tells the driver anything - the failure owners nicknamed "EcoBoom". Ford issued a revised hose and degas bottle design and carried out the work as a service action, NOT as a DVSA safety recall, so it does not appear on the GOV.UK recall checker and many cars were never done

An overdue cambelt is the most expensive thing a seller can fail to mention on a used Fiesta. These are the figures UK specialists work to.

The Mk7 Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost (2012 to 2017) and the Mk8 at its 2017 launch have a wet belt, per Ford's specification sheets. Ford's original schedule for this belt was 10 years / 150,000 miles. In June 2026 Ford told the US safety regulator NHTSA it was cutting that to 6 years / 100,000 miles for vehicles worldwide with this engine, which it calls the 1.0 Fox Classic, because degraded belt material can block the oil pickup and starve the engine of oil. UK advice was still 10 years / 150,000 miles into 2025, so plenty of cars with a full service history are past the new figure. The revised figure is recorded, and specialists advise changing it sooner still. Ford later moved the Mk8 to the chain version, and by the 2021 facelift every 1.0 EcoBoost Fiesta, mild hybrid included, has the chain. Ford hasn't published the changeover date and reports range from late 2018 to 2020, so a 2018 to 2020 Mk8 needs its engine code checked. Garages use the turbo position as a quick check (at the radiator end on the belt engine, at the bulkhead end on the chain engine), but Ford doesn't document that.

Later Mk8 Fiestas (every car from the 2021 facelift, and some earlier) have the chain version of the 1.0 EcoBoost, including the 125 and 155PS mild hybrids. Ford's specification sheets list a timing chain with a hydraulic tensioner for this version of the 1.0 EcoBoost, so there is no cambelt to replace. Every 48V mild hybrid 1.0 EcoBoost has the chain engine. The earlier engine with the wet belt looks similar and carries the same badge, so on a car near the changeover check the engine code rather than the badge.

The 1.25 Sigma/Zetec-SE petrol is belt driven. Ford dealers commonly quote 10 years / 100,000 miles while editorial sources give 8 years / 100,000 miles, so the shorter 8-year term is recorded. Failures are rare but this is an interference engine, and many garages advise doing belt and tensioner earlier on age grounds.

The 1.5 TDCi (PSA-derived DLD family) uses a conventional dry belt, not a wet belt. The catalogue schedule is 240,000 km (149,000 miles) or 10 years; given how high that mileage figure is, the 10-year limit is the operative one on UK cars. Trade practice is often much earlier, around 100,000 miles. Replace belt kit and water pump together.

The 1.6 TDCi (PSA DV6) is belt driven. Ford's schedule for this engine is 140,000 km (87,000 miles) / 10 years for cars built to July 2011 and 180,000 km (112,500 miles) / 10 years after; the shorter figure is recorded. Known for tensioner problems, so always replace the water pump with the belt.

The Mk8 Fiesta 1.1 Ti-VCT three-cylinder (70, 75 and 85PS) uses a WET belt: Ford's own specification lists a belt-in-oil drive, and later 75PS cars are still catalogued with belts. It's the engine most buyers don't expect to have one, because it's the non-turbo entry Fiesta. It is a different engine from the 1.0 EcoBoost, and Ford's 2026 interval cut names only the 1.0, so no revised Ford figure exists for it. Catalogues quote 10 years / 240,000 km; wet-belt specialists advise 8 years / 80,000 miles and strict use of the correct oil, because degraded belt material can block the oil pickup exactly as on the 1.0.

The three-cylinder 1.5 EcoBoost is in the Mk4 Focus (150 and 182PS) and the Mk8 Fiesta ST (200PS). Ford's specification sheets list a timing chain with a hydraulic tensioner, so there is no cambelt to replace. This is not the earlier four-cylinder 1.5 EcoBoost (to 2018), which has a conventional dry belt. Some sources report that engines built from February 2019 drive the oil pump by a belt running in oil, which Ford's sheets don't mention, so ask for the service history to show the oil pump belt if the car is near 10 years old.

Always confirm against the vehicle handbook. Intervals vary by engine, and several manufacturers revised theirs after failures in service.

Three stand out. Gearbox: the 6-speed dry clutch Powershift automatic transmission is highly problematic (typically 15000 to 80000 miles). Which Ford Fiesta years should I avoid?

No Ford Fiesta year is a write-off, but the Mk7 (2008 to 2017) carries the most serious faults: gearbox, fuel system, engine and cooling system. Year matters less than whether the specific car has had the known fixes, so check the history for them.
