Is the Toyota Corolla Verso reliable?

The Toyota Corolla Verso has 3 known faults in our database across 2 generations, 2 of them rated high severity. The most serious are engine (electrolytic corrosion around cylinder liners causing head gasket seal failure) and gearbox (MMT actuator and ECU failure causing the car to drop into neutral while driving or refuse). None of them makes the car a bad buy on its own; the risk is a seller who knows and says nothing.

That is a count of the faults we hold, not a reliability score. Popular cars get written about more, and a newer generation has had less time to show its faults.

Which Toyota Corolla Verso years should you avoid?

No year is a write-off on its own. What matters is which serious faults a given year and engine can have, and whether the car in front of you has had them fixed.

Mk2, 2004 to 20092 high severity

Engine/EmissionsMedium severity📝 Editorial

The 1.8 VVT-i (1ZZ-FE) can start burning oil heavily once past about 40,000 miles, up to a litre every 600 miles, because its piston oil-control rings clog and wear. Toyota issued a service bulletin in May 2006 covering engines built up to July 2005, when the pistons and rings were revised. Run low on oil unnoticed and the engine can be wrecked.

Rough guide
£Unknown

Typical symptoms

  • Oil level dropping between services
  • Blue smoke from the exhaust, especially after idling
  • Oil warning light on long runs
  • Oil-fouled spark plugs or misfires

Affected vehicles

1.8 VVT-i petrol (1ZZ-FE), engines built up to July 2005; not the 1.6 VVT-i (3ZZ-FE) or the diesels

Toyota Corolla Verso buying questions

What are the most common Toyota Corolla Verso problems?

Three stand out. Engine: electrolytic corrosion around cylinder liners causing head gasket seal failure (typically 60000 to 120000 miles). Gearbox: MMT actuator and ECU failure causing the car to drop into neutral while driving or refuse to select (typically 50000 to 90000 miles). Engine: the 1.8 VVT-i (1ZZ-FE) can start burning oil heavily once past about 40,000 miles (typically 40000+ miles). The full list above is grouped by generation, with typical mileage and a rough repair cost for each.

Which Toyota Corolla Verso years should I avoid?

No Toyota Corolla Verso year is a write-off, but the Mk2 (2004 to 2009) carries the most serious faults: engine and gearbox. The Mk1 (2002 to 2004) has none rated high severity. Year matters less than whether the specific car has had the known fixes, so check the history for them.

Where this Toyota Corolla Verso fault data comes from

If you used to check the Honest John “Good & Bad” section before the site closed in 2026, this page is where that information now lives.
