Is the Peugeot 107 reliable?

The Peugeot 107 has 3 known faults in our database, 3 of them rated high severity. The most serious are engine (water pump failures are common on both the 1.0 petrol and the 1.4 HDi) and gearbox (premature clutch wear and noise issues on 1.0 petrol models). None of them makes the car a bad buy on its own; the risk is a seller who knows and says nothing.

That is a count of the faults we hold, not a reliability score. Popular cars get written about more, and a newer generation has had less time to show its faults.

Which Peugeot 107 years should you avoid?

No year is a write-off on its own. What matters is which serious faults a given year and engine can have, and whether the car in front of you has had them fixed.

Years and engines with a serious known fault

  • 2005 to 2014, 1.0 Petrol / 1.4 HDI: water pump failures are common on both the 1.0 petrol and the 1.4 HDi
  • 2005 to 2009, 1.0 Petrol (pre-2009 180mm clutch): premature clutch wear and noise issues on 1.0 petrol models
  • 2005 to 2014, All variants: electric power steering failures are reported at three to four years old

Each one is set out in full below, with the symptoms, the typical mileage and a rough repair cost.

Peugeot 107 Mk1 (2005 to 2014) problems

Engine/EmissionsHigh severity💬 4 owner reports, 2012 to 2014

Water pump failures are common on both the 1.0 petrol and the 1.4 HDi, often at around three to six years old. The original pump was uprated from 2009, and the 1.4 HDi pump's plastic housing was replaced by aluminium because it became brittle and cracked. A leaking pump loses coolant and can overheat the engine.

Rough guide
£250-400

Typical symptoms

  • Coolant leaks visible under the car
  • Engine overheating, indicated by temperature gauge
  • Low coolant level warning light
  • Whining or grinding noise from the water pump area

Transmission/ClutchHigh severity💬 4 owner reports, 2012

Premature clutch wear and noise issues on 1.0 petrol models, sometimes lasting as little as two and a half years. This was attributed to water ingress causing surface corrosion and was addressed by a TSB to replace the original 180mm clutch with a larger 190mm unit from the 2009 facelift onwards.

Rough guide
£600-900

Typical symptoms

  • Slipping clutch, especially under acceleration
  • Noise from clutch during stop-and-go conditions
  • Abnormal smell from clutch (burning)
  • Difficulty engaging gears

Affected vehicles

Engines:
1.0 Petrol (pre-2009 180mm clutch)

ElectricalHigh severity💬 2 owner reports, 2013

Electric power steering failures are reported at three to four years old, with a new motor costing around 650 pounds; the power steering control unit is also a known failure. Holding the steering on full lock for long periods is thought to burn the motor out.

Rough guide
£650-1000

Typical symptoms

  • Heavy steering, especially at low speeds
  • Loss of power steering assistance
  • Power steering warning light on dashboard
  • Unusual noises from the steering column

What owners report on the Mk1

2 single reports, unconfirmed

One owner each, in their own words rewritten as a line, and not counted in our risk scoring. A fault joins the list above once a second report or an editorial source backs it.

Peugeot 107 timing chain, and service intervals

A timing chain has no change interval, which is not the same as lasting for ever. Listen for it on a used 107, and check the oil has been changed on time. These are the figures UK specialists work to.

Timing chainChain
1KR-FE, 1KR
No fixed replacement interval

The 1.0 in the 107 and 108 is Toyota's 1KR-FE three-cylinder, shared with the Aygo, and it has a timing chain with no fixed replacement interval. It is often badged 1.0 VTi, which is also the name of PSA's own 1.0 in the 208 and C3, and that engine has a wet belt, so go by the car rather than the badge. Listen for a rattle on a cold start, which points to a worn tensioner.

Always confirm against the vehicle handbook. Intervals vary by engine, and several manufacturers revised theirs after failures in service.

Repair costs are typical UK ranges, not quotes. Actual cost depends on condition and garage.Data last verified: October 2026
