The rear chassis rails rot from the inside out in the section around and above the fuel tank and at the rear crossmember, where mud and salt collect inside the box sections and cannot be seen without getting underneath. It is common enough that off-the-shelf rear quarter chassis replacement sections exist; advanced rot spreading forward of the tank means the vehicle needs a full chassis swap and is usually not economic to save.
