Is the Kia Niro reliable?

The Kia Niro has 2 known faults in our database, 2 of them rated high severity. The most serious are gearbox (kia Motors (UK) recalled Niro Hybrid and Niro Plug-in Hybrid cars built between 1) and electrics (DVSA recall R/2019/167 (May 2019) covers about 5,000 UK Niro Hybrid). None of them makes the car a bad buy on its own; the risk is a seller who knows and says nothing.

That is a count of the faults we hold, not a reliability score. Popular cars get written about more, and a newer generation has had less time to show its faults.

Which Kia Niro years should you avoid?

No year is a write-off on its own. What matters is which serious faults a given year and engine can have, and whether the car in front of you has had them fixed.

Kia Niro (2016 to 2022) problems

Transmission/ClutchHigh severity🏛️ Official recall

Kia Motors (UK) recalled Niro Hybrid and Niro Plug-in Hybrid cars built between 1 November 2016 and 11 September 2017 in August 2018: burrs inside the dual-clutch gearbox's hydraulic clutch actuator housing can damage the oil seal, so oil leaks and collects in the phase cap, where it can cause an electrical short and, in extreme cases, a fire. Dealers inspect the actuator and repair or replace it free of charge

ElectricalHigh severity🏛️ Official recall

DVSA recall R/2019/167 (May 2019) covers about 5,000 UK Niro Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid cars built between November 2016 and September 2017: contact pressure on the main relays in the hybrid power relay assembly, under the rear seat, can drop, so the relays heat up and can short, with a fire risk. The HEV warning light comes on and the car may not start. Dealers replace the main relays and inspect the assembly, replacing it if it shows heat damage, free of charge

Kia Niro buying questions

Which Kia Niro years should I avoid?

No Kia Niro year is a write-off, but the Niro (2016 to 2022) carries the most serious faults: gearbox and electrics. Year matters less than whether the specific car has had the known fixes, so check the history for them.

What should I check when viewing a used Kia Niro?

Ask the seller about the gearbox and electrics faults on this page and whether they have been fixed, with invoices. On the test drive watch for no warning in most cases before a failure and HEV warning light on the dashboard. Read the MOT history for repeat advisories, then paste the advert into the free check, which reads it against its known faults before you travel. Check a Kia Niro advert →

What is the real MPG of a Kia Niro?

Owners report 58.8 mpg on average across the Kia Niro engines with data, about 69% of the official combined figure. Where this Kia Niro fault data comes from

If you used to check the Honest John “Good & Bad” section before the site closed in 2026, this page is where that information now lives. We rebuilt the Kia Niro owner-report history from the archived Honest John dataset, added our own research, specialist and owner-club sources and DVSA recall data, and we keep it free. Each fault above is badged with its source. The same data feeds our free advert check, which reads a listing against every known fault for the exact engine and year.
