Is the Ford EcoSport reliable?

The Ford EcoSport has 2 known faults in our database, 2 of them rated high severity. The most serious are engine (wet timing belt (belt-in-oil) degradation causing oil pickup blockage and oil starvation) and cooling system (the nylon coolant degas hose goes brittle with heat cycling and cracks or snaps). None of them makes the car a bad buy on its own; the risk is a seller who knows and says nothing.

That is a count of the faults we hold, not a reliability score. Popular cars get written about more, and a newer generation has had less time to show its faults.

Which Ford EcoSport years should you avoid?

No year is a write-off on its own. What matters is which serious faults a given year and engine can have, and whether the car in front of you has had them fixed.

Years and engines with a serious known fault

  • 2012 to 2023, 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (the same wet-belt engine as the Focus and Fiesta): wet timing belt (belt-in-oil) degradation causing oil pickup blockage
  • 2012 to 2017, 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (the same engine as the Fiesta and Focus): the nylon coolant degas hose goes brittle with heat cycling

Each one is set out in full below, with the symptoms, the typical mileage and a rough repair cost.

CoolingHigh severity📝 Editorial

The nylon coolant degas hose goes brittle with heat cycling and cracks or snaps, often at speed. The 1.0 EcoBoost carries very little coolant and runs high thermal loads, so it can empty in seconds and warp the alloy cylinder head before the temperature gauge tells the driver anything (the failure owners nicknamed "EcoBoom"). Ford issued a revised hose and degas bottle design and carried out the work as a service action, not as a DVSA safety recall, so it does not appear on the GOV.UK recall checker and many cars were never done.

Rough guide
£1000-3000

  • temperature gauge spiking
  • cracked cylinder head

Ford EcoSport cambelt, and service intervals

An overdue cambelt is the most expensive thing a seller can fail to mention on a used EcoSport. These are the figures UK specialists work to.

1.0 EcoBoost timing belt (cambelt)Wet belt
100,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first

The EcoSport 1.0 EcoBoost has a wet belt, per Ford's specification sheet. Ford's original schedule for this belt was 10 years / 150,000 miles. In June 2026 Ford told the US safety regulator NHTSA it was cutting that to 6 years / 100,000 miles for vehicles worldwide with this engine, which it calls the 1.0 Fox Classic, because degraded belt material can block the oil pickup and starve the engine of oil. UK advice was still 10 years / 150,000 miles into 2025, so plenty of cars with a full service history are past the new figure. The revised figure is recorded, and specialists advise changing it sooner still. No chain version has been confirmed for the EcoSport before it was dropped in 2022, but that is unconfirmed for the last cars, so check the engine code on a late one.

Always confirm against the vehicle handbook. Intervals vary by engine, and several manufacturers revised theirs after failures in service.

Repair costs are typical UK ranges, not quotes. Actual cost depends on condition and garage.Data last verified: September 2026

Ford EcoSport buying questions

Which Ford EcoSport years should I avoid?

No Ford EcoSport year is a write-off, but the Mk2 (2014 to 2022) carries the most serious faults: engine and cooling system. Year matters less than whether the specific car has had the known fixes, so check the history for them.

What should I check when viewing a used Ford EcoSport?

Ask the seller about the engine and cooling system faults on this page and whether they have been fixed, with invoices. On the test drive watch for low oil pressure warning and sudden loss of coolant. Read the MOT history for repeat advisories, then paste the advert into the free check, which reads it against its known faults before you travel. Check a Ford EcoSport advert →

What is the real MPG of a Ford EcoSport?

Owners report 39.9 mpg on average across the Ford EcoSport engines with data, about 79% of the official combined figure. The gap between official and real-world economy varies a lot by engine, so the Real MPG page lists every engine and generation separately, from 265 owner submissions. Where this Ford EcoSport fault data comes from

If you used to check the Honest John “Good & Bad” section before the site closed in 2026, this page is where that information now lives. We rebuilt the Ford EcoSport owner-report history from the archived Honest John dataset, added our own research, specialist and owner-club sources and DVSA recall data, and we keep it free. Each fault above is badged with its source. The same data feeds our free advert check, which reads a listing against every known fault for the exact engine and year.
