Is the Jaguar X-Type reliable?

The Jaguar X-Type has 6 known faults in our database, 2 of them rated high severity. The most serious are bodywork (the sills rot from the inside out, starting at the inner sill) and gearbox (automatic gearbox failures on 2.5 or 3.0 X-Types more than four years old were). None of them makes the car a bad buy on its own; the risk is a seller who knows and says nothing.

That is a count of the faults we hold, not a reliability score. Popular cars get written about more, and a newer generation has had less time to show its faults.

Which Jaguar X-Type years should you avoid?

No year is a write-off on its own. What matters is which serious faults a given year and engine can have, and whether the car in front of you has had them fixed.

Years and engines with a serious known fault

  • 2001 to 2009, All: the sills rot from the inside out, starting at the inner sill
  • 2001 to 2009, 2.5 and 3.0 V6 automatic: automatic gearbox failures on 2.5 or 3.0 X-Types more than four years old were

Each one is set out in full below, with the symptoms, the typical mileage and a rough repair cost.

Jaguar X-Type X400 (2001 to 2009) problems

Bodywork/ChassisHigh severity📝 Editorial

The sills rot from the inside out, starting at the inner sill, and the damage is hidden behind the plastic sill mouldings so the car looks sound until the rot is advanced. Every X-Type is susceptible; cars from the 2004 model year were improved but not cured. Sills are structural and an MOT item, and because these cars are now worth very little, a proper welded repair can cost as much as the car is worth, which is what makes this a walk-away decision rather than a haggling point.

Rough guide
£400-2000

Typical symptoms

  • bubbling or brown staining at the edges of the plastic sill mouldings
  • crusty or soft metal along the sill when pressed from underneath
  • MOT advisories or failures citing corrosion of the sill or a prescribed area
  • welded patches or fresh underseal along the sills

Fuel SystemMedium severity📝 Editorial

Diesel fuel pump failures on both the 2.0 and the 2.2 were becoming more frequent by early 2010, and a failing pump can take the injectors with it. The first X-Type diesels also shared the running problems of the Mondeo's 2.0 TDCi.

Typical symptoms

  • hard starting or refusing to start
  • engine cutting out
  • rough or uneven idle
  • engine management light

Transmission/ClutchMedium severity📝 Editorial

Dual-mass flywheel failures on the 2.2 diesel ran at a high rate during late 2009. Clutch failures have also been reported, and one report says some 2009 diesels went through more than one clutch before a different make of clutch was fitted.

Typical symptoms

  • rattle at tickover that goes away with the clutch pedal down
  • judder pulling away
  • clutch slipping under load
  • difficulty selecting first gear

CoolingMedium severity📝 Editorial

The V6's bottom radiator hose is held by a wire clip that can pop off and dump all the coolant. A bulletin swapped it for a screw clip, but it's awkward to reach and the fix wasn't always done properly.

Typical symptoms

  • sudden coolant loss
  • temperature gauge rising quickly
  • coolant puddle below the radiator

Transmission/ClutchHigh severity📝 Editorial

Automatic gearbox failures on 2.5 or 3.0 X-Types more than four years old were increasing, with Jaguar usually contributing on low-mileage, dealer-serviced cars. Readers also reported automatic gearboxes failing with a fractured internal clutch piston. The fluid needs the gearbox at a set temperature and diagnostic equipment to fill correctly, and the X-Type needs its own specific fluid.

Typical symptoms

  • slipping or flaring between gears
  • harsh or delayed changes
  • loss of drive in some gears
  • gearbox warning or limp mode

Transmission/ClutchMedium severity📝 Editorial

The four-wheel drive X-Types have had transfer box failures, along with clutch failures and whines from the drivetrain.

Typical symptoms

  • whine or drone from the drivetrain that changes with speed
  • clunk when taking up drive
  • vibration through the car at speed

What owners report on the X400

5 single reports, unconfirmed

One owner each, in their own words rewritten as a line, and not counted in our risk scoring. A fault joins the list above once a second report or an editorial source backs it.

  • Engine · August 2015A 2004 X-Type 2.2 diesel experienced sudden surging during deceleration, with the dash indicating "cruise control cancelled" when braking hard.
  • Gearbox and clutch · November 2013A 2004 2.5 AWD model had difficulty engaging first gear due to a failing dual-mass flywheel and clutch, costing £1,400 to replace.
  • Fuel system · January 2012If a 2.0 or 2.2 diesel starts but will not tick over in cold weather, a sticking engine fuel pump valve sensor may be the cause.
  • Engine · August 2011A defective heat sensor in the cylinder block caused a 2.0D X-Type to become sluggish; the fault was hard to trace and did not register in the ECU.
  • Engine · August 2011A rumble from the front of a 2.5 or 3.0 V6 indicated the bottom crank pulley damper assembly was separating, costing £83.23 plus VAT for the part.

What owners like about the X400

3 notes
  • The soft suspension provides good handling without being overly firm, and the 2.5 engine is smoother than the 3.0 litre.
  • The X-Type achieved a strong four-star rating for occupant protection in its 2002 NCAP crash safety assessment.
  • From 2004, the X-Type Estate was sold with a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Jaguar X-Type recalls

Recall work is done by the manufacturer, and GOV.UK says you will not usually have to pay for it. These are the 1 DVSA recall for the X-Type, newest first. They do not tell you whether this particular car has had the work: for that, put the registration into the free GOV.UK MOT history check, which shows a recall status where the manufacturer shares it, or ask a franchised dealer to check the VIN.

Jaguar X-Type buying questions

What are the most common Jaguar X-Type problems?

Three stand out. Bodywork: the sills rot from the inside out, starting at the inner sill. Gearbox: automatic gearbox failures on 2.5 or 3.0 X-Types more than four years old were increasing. Fuel system: diesel fuel pump failures on both the 2.0 and the 2.2 were becoming more frequent by early 2010. The full list above is grouped by generation, with typical mileage and a rough repair cost for each.

Which Jaguar X-Type years should I avoid?

No Jaguar X-Type year is a write-off, but the X400 (2001 to 2009) carries the most serious faults: bodywork and gearbox. Year matters less than whether the specific car has had the known fixes, so check the history for them.

What should I check when viewing a used Jaguar X-Type?

Ask the seller about the bodywork, gearbox and fuel system faults on this page and whether they have been fixed, with invoices. On the test drive watch for bubbling or brown staining at the edges of the plastic sill mouldings, slipping or flaring between gears and hard starting or refusing to start. Read the MOT history for repeat advisories, then paste the advert into the free check, which reads it against all 6 known faults before you travel. Check a Jaguar X-Type advert →

Are there any recalls on the Jaguar X-Type?

The DVSA lists 1 safety recall for the Jaguar X-Type issued in 2011. The most recent, from September 2011, is "Cruise control may remain engaged". Recall work is done by the manufacturer, and GOV.UK says you will not usually have to pay for it. This list is by model, so it cannot tell you whether one particular car has had the work: the free GOV.UK MOT history check shows a recall status from the registration where the manufacturer shares it, and a franchised dealer can check the VIN.

What is the real MPG of a Jaguar X-Type?

Owners report 39.2 mpg on average across the Jaguar X-Type engines with data, about 90% of the official combined figure. The gap between official and real-world economy varies a lot by engine, so the Real MPG page lists every engine and generation separately, from 789 owner submissions.
