Fiat Ducato Mk2 (230) / Mk3 (244) (1994-2006) problems
Transmission/ClutchMedium severity📝 Editorial
The classic Ducato 5th gear failure: 5th is a bolt-on gear on the end of a 4-speed cluster, fed by a marginal oil drip, and windscreen drainage water entering through the gearbox breather emulsifies the oil. The synchro cone and hub strip, 5th jumps out or is lost suddenly - often with a bang and no warning, sometimes at only 60,000 miles. Motorhome gearbox specialists quote 1250-1750 pounds for the rebuild. The same failure affects the sister Peugeot Boxer and Citroen Relay
Rough guide
£1250-1750
Typical symptoms
gear lever moves back and forth in 5th as you accelerate and lift off

Fiat Ducato X250 (2006-2014) problems
Transmission/ClutchMedium severity💬 Owner reports
Severe clutch judder when reversing or pulling away uphill, caused by an over-tall reverse ratio and driveline resonance on X250-based motorhomes. Fiat called it a characteristic and issued a series of fixes (software torque map, revised engine mounting, lower ratio reverse gear) that only partly cured it. The judder hammers the clutch, dual-mass flywheel and the 1st-2nd synchro, so vans that have lived with it often need a clutch and DMF at 800-1800 pounds
Rough guide
£800-1800
Typical symptoms
violent shuddering through the body when reversing at tickover, especially uphill or on a slope
judder pulling away with the motorhome loaded
crunch or baulk shifting from 1st to 2nd on worn vans
Affected vehicles
Engines:
2.3 / 3.0 Multijet manual (worst on 130/160 with 6-speed)
Typical mileage:
20000-80000 miles

Fiat Ducato service intervals: cambelt, chain and gearbox oil
An overdue cambelt is the most expensive thing a seller can fail to mention on a used Ducato. These are the figures UK specialists work to.
Timing belt (cambelt)Belt
2.3 MULTIJET
96,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first
Interval is 5 years or 96,000-120,000 miles. For motorhomes that sit for long periods or vans doing stop-start urban work, specialists advise 4 years.
Timing chainChain
3.0 MULTIJET
No fixed replacement interval
The 3.0 uses a timing chain, unlike the 2.3 which uses a belt.
Always confirm against the vehicle handbook. Intervals vary by engine, and several manufacturers revised theirs after failures in service.
Repair costs are typical UK ranges, not quotes. Actual cost depends on condition and garage.Data last verified: August 2026
Where this Fiat Ducato fault data comes from
If you used to check the Honest John “Good & Bad” section before the site closed in 2026, this page is where that information now lives. We rebuilt the Fiat Ducato owner-report history from the archived Honest John dataset, added our own research, specialist and owner-club sources and DVSA recall data, and we keep it free. Each fault above is badged with its source. The same data feeds our free advert check, which reads a listing against every known fault for the exact engine and year.
Knowing what a Fiat Ducato goes wrong with is half of it. The rest is reading the advert and checking the car's history before you hand any money over.
