The GM-sourced 4T65E-V automatic behind the 2.9 T6 was not built for the weight and torque of the XC90 and fails early and repeatedly. Two secondary causes make it worse: a failing transmission oil cooler seal lets coolant into the gearbox, and worn axle seals let CV joint grease in. Volvo never issued a UK fix and denied a systemic problem, so cars were repaired under warranty, goodwill or the owner's wallet.
