The supercharged and turbocharged 1.4 TSI in the Ibiza FR and Cupra is known for heavy oil use and outright engine failure. One owner's engine was replaced for oil use within a year, and others failed at between 30,000 and 44,000 miles, one with a hole in the block. The recorded causes are piston and ring cracking, made worse by 95 octane fuel, plus a weak timing chain tensioner; revised pistons, rings and tensioner arrived in late 2012.
