Is the Lexus RX reliable?
The Lexus RX has 2 known faults in our database across 3 generations, 2 of them rated high severity. The most serious are electrics (inverter Intelligent Power Module (IPM) failure causing the hybrid system to shut down) and fuel system (lexus UK recalled RX 450h cars built between September 2013 and May 2019 (alongside GS). None of them makes the car a bad buy on its own; the risk is a seller who knows and says nothing.
That is a count of the faults we hold, not a reliability score. Popular cars get written about more, and a newer generation has had less time to show its faults.
Which Lexus RX years should you avoid?
No year is a write-off on its own. What matters is which serious faults a given year and engine can have, and whether the car in front of you has had them fixed.

Fuel SystemHigh severity🏛️ Official recall
Lexus UK recalled RX 450h cars built between September 2013 and May 2019 (alongside GS, LS, LC and NX models) in 2020 because the impeller in the low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank may have been made with too low a density. It can deform and jam against the pump body, so the pump stops, warning lights come on, the engine runs rough and it can stall while driving and may not restart. The remedy is a free replacement with an improved fuel pump

Recall work is done by the manufacturer, and GOV.UK says you will not usually have to pay for it. These are the 5 DVSA recalls for the RX, newest first. They do not tell you whether this particular car has had the work: for that, put the registration into the free GOV.UK MOT history check, which shows a recall status where the manufacturer shares it, or ask a franchised dealer to check the VIN.

Vehicle could suddenly stop
It is possible that due to variations in the build specification of the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) which includes the Insluted-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT's) the lead-based solder could be affected by abnormally higher operating temperatures. This could result in a degrading of the solder and eventually heat damage to the IGBT's. If this occurs then warning lights on the instrument panel will illuminate. However if the driver fails to heed these warnings or the main power supply fuse blows then the vehicle could stop without warning.
Put right by: Recall all the affected vehicles and replace the IPM unit with a upgraded unit.

Steering may be affected
Due to a none conformance to specification the front crankshaft pulley inner and outer rubber mounted section may separate. If the separation occurs noise will become apparent the ignition warning lamp may illuminate and in the worst case the power steering drive belt may detach from the pulley which will result in the driver having to significantly increase their effort to steer the vehicle especially at low speed.
Put right by: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to check and where necessary replace the crankshaft pulley.

Lexus RX buying questions
Which Lexus RX years should I avoid?
No Lexus RX year is a write-off, but the 2nd Gen (2003 to 2009) carries the most serious faults: electrics. The 4th Gen (2015 to 2022) has high-severity faults on record too. The 3rd Gen (2009 to 2015) has none rated high severity. Year matters less than whether the specific car has had the known fixes, so check the history for them.
