Car Advert Check vs the other UK car checks

The finance, theft and write-off records are the same whoever you pay. Here’s what each check does with them, read off its own site, with the date we read it.

18 providers compared · copy updated

Every UK vehicle check reads the same registers for outstanding finance, theft markers and write-offs, so none of them holds better records than the rest, ours included. The difference is what a check does next. Ours reads the advert you’re looking at, the car’s whole MOT advisory history and the model’s known faults against those records, and nothing on any of the 18 sites below describes doing that. Each of them wins something specific, though, and every page here says what.

Every provider at a glance

Our row first, because it’s our site and we’re the pick for a buyer with an advert open. “No” means nothing on that provider’s own site describes it, not that it can’t.

Price, free tier and guarantee

We don’t argue on price, and several of these are cheaper than our Provenance Check. Our own row links to the pricing page rather than printing a figure, because promotions change it.

Common questions

Do all UK car checks use the same data?

On the three things that cost buyers the most, yes. Outstanding finance comes from the lenders, theft markers from the police and write-off records from the insurance industry's register, and every UK provider reads those same registers. Nobody holds a private source, us included. The RAC sells its check as "Powered by HPI" and the AA says its checks are provided by HPI Limited, which is the clearest evidence there is. What differs is what each check does with the records once they arrive.

Why are the prices on these pages dated?

Because a price is only ever what a provider's own site showed on the day we read it, and providers change them. Every figure on these pages is read off the company's own pages or checkout, never from a comparison blog, and the date is printed next to it. When a later re-check couldn't read a site, the page says so and tells you to look at the live price before you buy. We'd rather show you an old figure with its date than a guess with none.

Which car check is best?

Our view, and we make one so weigh that: for a private buyer with an advert open, the check that does the most with the shared records, which is the one that also reads the advert, the MOT advisory history and the model's known faults. That's ours. Other checks win specific jobs: HPI for the biggest guarantee, Total Car Check on price, carVertical for an imported car, MotorCheck or Brego for a car's past adverts. Each provider's page on this site says where it wins.

What is the advert not telling you?

Paste the advert text and the registration. We read it against the car’s DVSA MOT history and our known-faults database, then tell you what the seller left out.
