Used Vauxhall Zafira buying guide (1999 to 2018): which one to buy and what to check

The Vauxhall Zafira Tourer is the safer buy if an automatic shifts cleanly and a 1.4T isn't losing oil, but steer clear of the Zafira B 1.9 CDTi, whose water pump and swirl flaps can wreck the engine.

26 known faults, 25 rated high severity in our database; owners report 37.9 mpg, 81% of the official figure. Everything below is built from that data and the archived owner history, not from a press car.

Which used Vauxhall Zafira should you buy?

The Zafira Tourer (C), sold from 2011 to 2018, is the one to aim for, because fewer known faults reach it than the Zafira B. Its main ones are sudden oil loss on the 1.4T petrol from 2012, automatic gearbox failures on 2010 to 2015 cars and electric parking brakes that let go on 2009 to 2012 cars. That doesn't make it trouble-free, so test the gearbox, the oil level and the parking brake on any Tourer.

The Zafira B (2005 to 2014) carries the longest list of serious known faults. Its heater blower has caught fire and is covered by recalls, the 1.9 CDTi can destroy itself through its water pump or swirl flaps, manuals can fail from around four years old, and diesel and torque converter autos can get coolant in their fluid. If you're set on a B, a 1.8 petrol manual with proof of the heater recall is the lesser risk, provided the gearbox and clutch pass a test drive.

The Zafira A (1999 to 2005) is only a buy with paperwork. On the 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 petrols, the belt, tensioner and belt-driven water pump have a known record of failing between 40,000 and 60,000 miles, so insist on receipts for all three. The 2.2 Z22SE petrol can starve its timing chain of oil, the 2.0 DI and 2.2 DI diesels have an oil consumption fault, and a failing ignition switch can short the starter motor.

Which Zafira engines and gearboxes are the safe choices?

Give the 1.9 CDTi diesel a miss. Its belt-driven water pump has a known habit of seizing and throwing the timing belt between 40,000 and 60,000 miles, and its inlet manifold swirl flaps can soot up, jam or snap off into the engine, with DPF and EGR trouble on cars that crawl through traffic, both between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. If you're set on one, it needs receipts showing a new water pump went on with the belt.

The 2.2 petrols aren't a safe swap. On the Z22YH, the timing chain tensioner can break or have its oil feed blocked between 70,000 and 100,000 miles, and one owner's 2005 car had its chain fail at 76,000 miles and needed a new engine priced at more than £6,000. The Siemens injection pump and pressure sensor on the 2.2 direct injection petrol can fail between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, and the Tourer's 1.4T has a known fault of heavy oil loss between 40,000 and 80,000 miles.

The 1.8 petrol manual is the lesser risk, since its known trouble sits in the gearbox and clutch rather than the engine, but early Zafira B 1.6 and 1.8 petrols built before June 2007 had an admitted clutch and flywheel problem, so feel for judder. On 2009 to 2015 cars, the 1.6 petrol manual has a known dual mass flywheel fault between 40,000 and 70,000 miles, and a clutch that judders as you pull away often means both the flywheel and clutch need replacing.

Neither gearbox type gets a clean bill. Manuals from 2005 to 2014 can whine, grind or fail between 40,000 and 80,000 miles. Automatics from 2010 to 2015 have a known failure record between 30,000 and 60,000 miles, diesel and torque converter autos can get coolant in their fluid through the radiator, and one owner's 2008 CDTi auto failed at 30,000 miles with a £4,600 replacement bill. Skip the 2004 to 2010 Easytronic automated manual, whose known failures often need a new throttle body and control unit.

What should you check when viewing a used Zafira?

Run the heater fan through every speed on a Zafira B, because its blower system is the subject of fire recalls covering 2005 to 2014 cars. A fan that only works on its top setting, cuts out or sends a hot plastic smell through the vents is a warning. Ask for proof the recall work's been done, and look for extra wiring such as parking sensors spliced into the heater harness, since one owner's recall couldn't go ahead until that was sorted.

Start it from cold. A rattle from a 2.2 petrol points to the timing chain, while smoke, hesitation, sudden power loss or limp mode on a 1.9 CDTi can mean the swirl flaps have seized. Pull the dipstick too: a low level on a 1.4T is the warning sign, and one owner's 2007 1.9 CDTi had a rising level, which usually means diesel meant for DPF regeneration is ending up in the sump.

On the drive, listen for whine from a manual gearbox, feel for gears that are hard to select and watch for judder as the clutch bites. Rule out an automatic that jerks or makes a noise going into reverse, or slips between gears. Park a 2009 to 2012 car with an electric parking brake on a slope and check it holds, and make sure the ABS and ESP warning lights go out on 2004 to 2010 cars.

Lift the front carpets on a Zafira A and feel for damp, and check the spare's still under the back on an A or B. Try the starter, lights and wipers, since the steering column module on 2004 to 2010 cars can cause starting and lighting faults. On a Tourer, ask for proof of the recalls for track rod ends, loose roof rails, insecure seat bolts on 2016 to 2017 cars and a 2016 side airbag that won't deploy properly.

Paste the advert into the free check and it runs these against the listing, the MOT history and the DVLA record before you travel.

Is a used Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 to 2005) a good buy?

The Zafira A is only worth buying with receipts, because the 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 petrols carry a known fault where the belt-driven water pump loses its impeller blades and seizes between 40,000 and 60,000 miles, throwing off the belt. Belts and tensioners on these engines were failing early too, so ask for paperwork showing the belt, tensioner, water pump and thermostat were done together. The drain plug threads in the 1.8's aluminium sump can strip, too.

The 2.2 Z22SE petrol has a known fault where a too-small oil spray jet blocks and starves the timing chain, showing up as a rattle on a cold start between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. Vauxhall changed the engine from March 2002, but dirty oil from stretched service intervals can still block the jet, and an engine that's had the fix has a modified bolt with notches on its hexagon corners. On the 2.2 direct injection petrol, the Siemens fuel pump and pressure sensor can fail.

The 2.0 DI and 2.2 DI 16v diesels have a known oil consumption fault between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, with blue exhaust smoke and rough running. Oil also pools in the head after you switch off, so a dipstick reading taken too soon looks low, gets topped up and the extra oil is burned. Dip it once the engine's been off for over an hour, and treat a low reading after that as genuine consumption.

The ignition barrel's plastic overheats, so a key that's hard to pull out or won't return is a sign the switch is going, and that can burn out the starter motor. The 2.2 petrol's ignition control unit can burn out too, the handbrake on rear discs often won't hold, and rear callipers have been known to stick. Recalls replaced faulty brake calliper pistons on 2002 cars and upgraded fuel lines that could split in a frontal crash on 2000 DI models.

Worst known faults on the Zafira A (1999 to 2005), from our database
  1. Genuine oil consumption problem on 2.0 DI and 2.2 DI 16v diesel engines, possibly due to bores machined with too high a gloss. This can... (high severity, typically 50000-100000 miles, about £1500-3000)
  2. Engine Control Units (ECUs) of Isuzu diesels are prone to failure, often due to dry solder joints. This can lead to significant running... (high severity, typically 80000-120000 miles, about £500-800)
  3. Timing chain lubrication problem on the Z22SE 2.2 litre engine, caused by an undersized oil spray nozzle that could block, starving the... (high severity, typically 60000-100000 miles, about £1000-2000)

What goes wrong on the Vauxhall Zafira B (2005 to 2014)?

The heater blower is the Zafira B's defining fault: water getting in, clogged pollen filters and bridged resistors have led to fires, and recalls fitted a tamper-proof resistor, a new fan motor and a revised panel below the windscreen. It's got a 5 star NCAP rating, but the 1.9 CDTi is its weak engine, with a known water pump fault between 40,000 and 60,000 miles, and one owner's 2008 1.9 CDTi 150 had its pump seize and wreck the engine.

The 1.9 CDTi's DPF and EGR valve have a known fault on cars used for slow running, and one owner of an 07 CDTi found the fast motorway runs needed to clear the filter a chore. Another 2007 1.9 CDTi had its DPF swapped for an aftermarket filter that didn't work with the engine's regeneration, and a 2009 1.9 diesel had its turbo fail, then needed a new engine, then lost its gearbox, all at about 73,000 miles.

Gearboxes are the B's other weak point, with a known record of manuals failing from around four years old. One owner's 2005 1.8 manual broke a planetary gear that punched through the gearbox sump, and a 2011 1.7 CDTI six-speed manual developed gearbox bearing whine. A 1.8 Easytronic owner was quoted £1,000 for a new clutch plus £1,000 for a new control unit, and a 2010 1.9 150 auto lost coolant with no visible leak, which its owner put down to the transmission cooler.

On a 2.2 petrol, one owner's 2008 car had its fuel pump and regulator replaced seven times by four years old, and a noisy 2008 petrol at 55,000 miles had a dealer suspecting collapsed swirl flaps in the inlet manifold. Alternators have a known habit of failing on cars used for short runs, some radios won't switch off and flatten the battery, and tailgate switches can fail. On 2005 to 2007 cars, check the horn works with the headlights on, and look underneath for rust, which has been reported.

Worst known faults on the Zafira B (2005 to 2014), from our database
  1. Failed timing belts on the 1.9 CDTi, often due to a seized water pump which is driven by the belt. The tension of a new belt can rapidly... (high severity, typically 40000-60000 miles, about £1000-2000)
  2. Failed inlet manifold swirl flaps on the 1.9 CDTi engine. The flaps can break off and be ingested by the engine, causing severe damage.... (high severity, typically 60000-100000 miles, about £800-2000)
  3. Automatic transmission failures are notorious, with GM reportedly on its 3rd variation of the transmission. Symptoms include noises and... (high severity, typically 30000-60000 miles, about £2400-5000)

How reliable is a used Vauxhall Zafira Tourer C (2011 to 2018)?

The 1.4T petrol is the Tourer's weak spot, with a known fault of sudden, heavy oil loss between 40,000 and 80,000 miles that starts with a faint rattle and lost power and ends with white smoke and a dead engine. One owner's 2015 1.4T auto, which had been serviced with an oil change at an independent garage, lost power with a rattle while driving home, and another 1.4T owner reported the same signs.

Automatics from 2010 to 2015 have a known failure record between 30,000 and 60,000 miles, and electric parking brakes on 2009 to 2012 cars can release on their own and let the car roll away, with cars built from August 2012 getting a lever handbrake instead. The middle row can't take three full-size child seats side by side, and there's no button to switch off the ESP for extra grip in snow.

Owners of Tourer diesels have reported a string of one-off failures. A 2014 2.0 CDTI had its EGR cooler fail and put oil in the coolant, a 2015 2.0 CDTI had the same exhaust sensor fail three times within weeks of purchase, another 2015 2.0 CDTI needed a glow plug at 36,000 miles, and one owner paid £1,400 for a new AdBlue module and pump on a 2016 1.6 CDTI at 48,000 miles.

The electric tailgate lock on one 2014 car kept unlocking itself on the move, so check it stays shut. On one 2012 car, the LED daytime running lights were sealed into the light cluster, and it failed its MoT when one wouldn't always light. Recalls covered roof rails that could work loose, track rod ends that weren't clamped tightly enough, insecure second and third-row seat fixings on 2016 to 2017 cars, and a 2016 side airbag fault.

Worst known faults on the Zafira Tourer (C) (2011 to 2018), from our database
  1. The 1.4T petrol engine can suffer from sudden and severe oil loss, leading to engine damage. Symptoms include a slight rattle, loss of... (high severity, typically 40000-80000 miles, about £2000-5000+)

What do Zafira owners like about them?

Seven seats fit in a body no longer than an Astra hatchback, the back two fold into the floor, and the middle row folds and slides forward to leave a flat load bay. From the 2003 facelift, there's room for three child seats abreast in the middle row of a Zafira A.

It feels solid, with no rattles even after 10,000 miles, and it drives nicely provided you're not hustling it through bends. They can go a long way, too: one driver got 461,000 miles out of a Zafira A with few problems, then did 471,000 miles in a Zafira B.

  • A Vauxhall Zafira A covered 461,000 miles with minimal issues, and a Zafira B achieved 471,000 miles, also proving very reliable.
  • The Zafira offers seven seats in a body similar to an Astra hatchback, with rearmost seats folding into the floor for a flat load bay.
  • This model features impressive build quality, a solid feel, and no rattles, even on a 10,000-mile example, with a 12-year anti-rust guarantee.
  • A 2003 facelift brought three-point safety restraints for every occupant and ISOFIX child seat anchors for the outer rear seats.
  • Vauxhall models generally had below-average warranty repair costs in the 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index.
