Used Kia Sorento review and buying guide (2003 to 2022): which one to buy and what to check
The 2015 to 2020 Kia Sorento is the lesser risk, with little on record beyond clutch failures on manuals, but avoid a 2003 to 2009 2.5 CRDi that cuts out, the sign of its fuel tank lining breaking up.
4 known faults, 2 rated high severity in our database; owners report 32.3 mpg, 83% of the official figure. Everything below is built from that data and the archived owner history, not from a press car.

The 2015 to 2020 Sorento is the lesser risk, though mostly because there's little on record about it, and that isn't the same as a clean record. The one known fault that runs past 2015 is early clutch and dual mass flywheel trouble on 2014 to 2017 manuals, with one car's clutch failing after six months, so on a manual make sure it bites cleanly without slipping, juddering or smelling hot.
The 2010 to 2015 car comes next, but its four-wheel drive carries a serious known fault. Three owners had driveline damage between 54,000 and 78,000 miles, mostly traced to tyres worn unevenly front to rear, which the system mistakes for wheelspin. One 2012 automatic stripped the splines in its transfer case after only the fronts were renewed, so buy one only with four matching tyres and a driveline that's quiet.
The 2003 to 2009 car is the riskiest. Its 2.5 CRDi diesel has a serious known fault where the fuel tank's inner lining breaks away and travels through the fuel system, cutting the engine out, and manuals of that era had rising clutch and dual mass flywheel failures plus gearbox trouble from around 80,000 miles, worst on cars that towed. Only buy one that's never cut out and has a smooth, quiet clutch.
Which Sorento engines and gearboxes are the safe choices?
There isn't a clean choice: the 2.5 CRDi in the 2003 to 2009 car carries a serious fuel tank fault, while no known fault names the 2.2 CRDi that reports on 2010 to 2015 cars mention, though that's a thin record rather than a clean one. One Hyundai Santa Fe, a different model with the same 2.2, needed a new cylinder head and block at around 94,000 miles and failed again at 125,000.
Avoid a 2.5 CRDi that's had repeated cut-outs, fuel filter changes or injector work without a lasting cure, because those are the signs of its tank lining coming apart. One 2005 automatic had a new filter, then three injectors blamed, before the tank itself was found to be the cause and Kia agreed to replace it. Don't take an injector diagnosis on this engine at face value until the tank's been ruled out.
On the 2003 to 2009 car, the early four-speed automatic had problems and was replaced by an improved five-speed, though the fuel tank fault applies whichever gearbox it has. Manuals from 2003 to 2009 and 2014 to 2017 both carry clutch and dual mass flywheel faults, and the older ones gearbox trouble too. On automatics from 2010, one owner's 2013 car that had towed a caravan grumbled in first gear at 50,000 miles.
What should you check when viewing a used Sorento?
Four tyres with matching tread come first on a 2003 to 2015 four-wheel-drive Sorento, because a gap front to rear makes the system think it's slipping. The older car can't cope with more than 2mm of difference. On the 2010 to 2015 car, driveline damage shows up as shudder, vibration or roaring at speed, a clunk or binding on tight turns, and steering that goes heavy or a car that crabs. One 2012 car shook and roared at 70mph.
On the test drive, pull away on a hill and reverse up a slope, then sniff for a hot clutch and feel for judder. A rattle at idle that goes quiet when you press the clutch pedal points to a worn dual mass flywheel. Make sure every gear goes in cleanly and there's no whine, as one 2011 car's second gear failed at 42,000 miles.
Underneath a 2003 to 2009 car, look hard at the rear trailing arm brackets for rust, which one owner reported and said Kia had asked dealers to inspect and replace, and check the self-levelling rear dampers for weeping, which one owner found on a 2007. Ask for proof of the December 2004 recall for alternator pulleys that could seize, and the 2007 recall on 2006 facelift cars whose airbag control unit wiring could fire the side curtain airbags wrongly.
On a 2010 to 2015 car, ask for receipts showing oil and filter changes at every service, since Kia's service contract didn't include one every time, and for proof of the 2010 recall on some KX-3s for door mood lighting wiring that could overheat. If an MoT brake test was done on a rolling road, it should have been one built for four-wheel drive: one 2007 Sorento's differential bearing was damaged on the wrong kind.
Is a used Kia Sorento BL (2003 to 2009) a good buy?
Only buy a BL that's never cut out and has a healthy clutch, because its 2.5 CRDi carries a serious known fault with the fuel tank lining and its manuals have clutch, flywheel and gearbox faults on record. One 2004 car kept shutting down under hard acceleration onto a motorway even after several new fuel filters, and more reports of the tank lining failing kept coming.
Manual gearbox trouble shows up after around four years and 80,000 miles, worst on cars that towed, and clutch and dual mass flywheel failures were rising by 2009. One 2006 car with 91,000 miles smoked while towing, with worn turbo oil seals suspected. Glow plugs can snap when someone tries to remove them, and then the cylinder head has to come off to get them out.
Some XT models on 18 inch wheels had slip sensor trouble that sent the wrong signals to the transfer box, and swapping the tyres front to rear partway through their life keeps the wear even. An LPG-converted 3.5 V6 can have its manifold swirl actuators snap off and tangle in the valves after around six years. The solid rear axle also blunts its handling on the road.
Worst known faults on the BL (2003 to 2009), from our database
The fuel tank's internal lining can come away and be carried through the fuel system. A 2005 2.5 CRDi automatic cut out repeatedly over... (high severity, typically Unknown miles)
Two separate transmission problems on manual first-generation Sorentos. Dual-mass flywheel and clutch failures were reported as rising... (medium severity, typically 80000 (gearbox) miles)
Real-world economy on this generation: Kia Sorento 28.5 mpg.
Should you buy a Kia Sorento XM (2010 to 2015)?
Buy an XM only with four matching tyres and a quiet driveline, because its four-wheel drive has a serious known fault that three owners hit between 54,000 and 78,000 miles. One 2012 automatic got new front tyres at 54,000 miles with part-worn rears left on, and the system took the tread gap for wheelspin, kicked in when it wasn't needed and stripped its transfer case splines.
Towing draws a couple of complaints. One owner found a 2011 car unstable behind a caravan and was told cars from 2010 to 2012 lack self-levelling suspension, and fitting towbar wiring means running cables from the battery to the back, as there's no plug-in connection. A 2014 manual bought at 20,000 miles had clutch trouble its owner put down to reversing up a steep slope to park, though it could already have been failing before the sale.
Other problems come from one owner each: a 2011 2.2 that needed a centre propshaft bearing at 78,000 miles and had worn front lower arm bushes and play in the ball joints, a 2013 car short of power until a faulty throttle sensor valve was found, remote keys that kept failing on a 2014 and a loose power and USB socket. The underslung full-size spare is easy for thieves to take, so check it's still there.
Worst known faults on the XM (2010 to 2015), from our database
Four-wheel-drive driveline damage, mostly linked to mismatched tyres. A 2012 automatic had two new front tyres fitted at 54,000 miles... (high severity, typically 54000-78000 miles)
Real-world economy on this generation: Kia Sorento 34.0 mpg, Kia Sorento 33.5 mpg.
Which Kia Sorento UM (2015 to 2020) is the one to buy?
A UM is the lesser risk of the three, though mostly because little is on record against it, and the one known fault that runs past 2015 is early clutch and dual mass flywheel failure on manuals. One April 2017 car's clutch went after six months, was replaced under warranty, then failed again in February 2019, when the clutch and flywheel were both renewed.
It earned five stars from Euro NCAP. Heavy towing is hard on a manual's clutch, though: one owner pulling a horsebox with a manual KX1 found the clutch smelt strongly when manoeuvring or reversing up a slope. Ask what a car's been used to tow, and test the clutch on a hill before you hand over any money.
Check the alloys for surface corrosion, as Kia turned down a warranty claim for it on one 2016 car, and open and close the sunroof, which began opening slowly on that same car once dirt and moisture built up in it. Beyond that there's little on record either way, so don't read the short list as proof it's trouble-free; a manual's clutch is the part to test hardest.
Worst known faults on the UM (2015 to 2020), from our database
Two owners of manual Sorentos reported early clutch trouble. An April 2017 car's clutch failed after six months and was replaced under... (medium severity, typically Unknown miles, about £2900 (clutch and DMF, one owner's bill, later reduced by 10%))
The 2015 to 2020 Kia Sorento is the lesser risk, with little on record beyond clutch failures on manuals, but avoid a 2003 to 2009 2.5 CRDi that cuts out, the sign of its fuel tank lining breaking up. Which Kia Sorento year is best to buy?
The 2015 to 2020 Sorento is the lesser risk, though mostly because there's little on record about it, and that isn't the same as a clean record. On the fault record the XM (2010 to 2015) carries 1 known fault against 2 on the BL (2003 to 2009). Each generation's section above gives the detail. Kia Sorento faults by generation.
What should I check when viewing a used Kia Sorento?
Four tyres with matching tread come first on a 2003 to 2015 four-wheel-drive Sorento, because a gap front to rear makes the system think it's slipping. Where this Kia Sorento guide comes from
If you used the Honest John car-by-car reviews before the site closed in 2026, this is where the Kia Sorento buying advice now lives. It is written from the archived owner reports and model notes (archived page, 58 items read for this model), our own known-faults database, the confirmed service intervals and the Real MPG figures. Every number on the page comes from that data, not from the text. The same data feeds our free advert check.
