Used Dacia Duster buying guide (2010 to 2024): which one to buy and what to check
Go for a Dacia Duster 1.5 dCi manual with cambelt receipts and no flashing glow plug light, and check 2012 to 2014 cars hard for rust; avoid the 1.2 TCe petrol, which burns oil.
4 known faults, 4 rated high severity in our database; owners report 44.2 mpg, 86% of the official figure. Everything below is built from that data and the archived owner history, not from a press car.

The Duster to go for is a 1.5 dCi manual, since the 1.2 TCe petrol's known fault can destroy its engine, but the year matters as much as what's under the bonnet. The known rust fault covers right-hand-drive cars built in India from 2012 to 2014, where thin paint and missing rustproofing let corrosion start between 20,000 and 80,000 miles. After 90 UK complaints about white cars rusting, Dacia moved UK production to Romania, but don't treat that as proof a later car's clean.
Skip the 1.2 TCe petrol from 2013 to 2017. Its known fault is undersized piston rings that let it burn oil, which then stretches the timing chain and can wreck the engine between 40,000 and 80,000 miles. The diesel isn't flawless either: on 2010 to 2014 cars the Delphi high-pressure fuel pump can break up inside, so the dCi is the lesser risk rather than a free pass.
The 2018 to 2024 Duster is quieter and more refined than the first one, and it's offered with petrol, diesel and LPG engines. There are only a handful of owner reports on it, which isn't the same as it being trouble-free. The EDC automatic has a known juddering and control module fault on 2017 to 2022 cars, so whichever generation you buy, a manual gearbox is the one to have.
Which Duster engines and gearboxes are the safe choices?
The 1.5 dCi diesel is the pick, provided its fuel system and belt history check out. On 2010 to 2014 cars there's a known fault where the Delphi high-pressure pump fails internally between 60,000 and 120,000 miles and sends metal swarf right through the fuel system. A flashing glow plug or engine management light, misfiring, stalling or a car that won't start are the warning signs, so don't buy one showing any of them.
The dCi has a cambelt, due every 72,000 miles or 72 months, and the water pump, tensioners and idler pulleys have to be replaced in the same job. Ask for a receipt that lists all of them. One owner had an injector fail at 4,000 miles, and another was quoted for a crankshaft end seal, dual mass flywheel and clutch after the seal failed on a 2014 car at 85,000 miles.
Avoid the 1.2 TCe petrol from 2013 to 2017. Its undersized piston rings are a known fault that makes it burn oil between 40,000 and 80,000 miles, and since it's a chain engine, the oil loss starves the tensioner of pressure until the chain stretches and the engine fails. Frequent low oil warnings, a rattle from the chain or black smoke from the exhaust are the symptoms to watch for.
The EDC dual-clutch automatic has a known fault on 2017 to 2022 cars: it judders and its transmission control module fails between 40,000 and 80,000 miles. A bad one shudders hard as you pull away, puts a gearbox warning light on, or gets stuck in gear and loses drive. The manual's the gearbox to choose, though one owner's 2013 dCi 2WD ground in first gear under acceleration and vibrated in the higher gears.
What should you check when viewing a used Duster?
Rust on a 2012 to 2014 car starts in places you won't spot at a glance, especially under the rubber door seals. Pull back the door seals and look at the spot welds and at the metal core inside the seals themselves, then check the tops and bottoms of the doors, the sill welds, the rear door child locks, the tailgate corners and the roof welds around the tailgate opening. Don't forget the fuel filler screws and the metal under the rear number plate.
Open the bonnet and run your eye along the edges of the inner wings, the exposed weld edges on the bonnet and the scuttle panel at the back of the engine bay, because bubbling paint there is a known sign. Get underneath and look for missing rubber grommets, which let water inside the body. Lift the carpets and check the boot floor, under the front passenger seat and the rear seat belt mountings, all places owners have found rust.
On the test drive, a flashing glow plug light, a misfire or stalling rules out a diesel, and on a 1.2 TCe you're listening for a chain rattle and watching for black smoke. Any shudder as an EDC auto pulls away means gearbox trouble. Try the lights and the ignition too: one owner's 2015 car lost its lights, and another's ignition switch stuck on and burnt out the starter motor, then did it again after both were replaced.
Ask for the cambelt receipt on any dCi, showing the water pump, tensioners and idler pulleys were done at the same time. Then ask for proof of the recall work. A recall issued in 2017 dealt with fuse box nuts that could seize and leave the terminals loose, which risked arcing, a horn that stops working, airbags going off or a fire, and there was a 2013 recall for a brake fault.
Is a used Dacia Duster 1st Gen (2010 to 2017) worth buying?
A 1st Gen Duster is worth buying as a 1.5 dCi manual with sound seams and cambelt receipts, but its known faults are serious ones. Right-hand-drive cars built in India from 2012 to 2014 rust early, the 2013 to 2017 1.2 TCe burns oil and stretches its chain, and 2010 to 2014 dCi models can lose their Delphi fuel pump between 60,000 and 120,000 miles.
On a 2012 to 2014 car, rust is the deciding issue. Owners found corrosion on cars just three and nine months old, with paint so thin the undercoat showed through on the doors and rust breaking out along the seams, especially on white cars. The 4x4 has its own weak spot: the exhaust runs beneath the rear diff and axle, so check it for dents and damage on a car that's been driven along rutted tracks.
Mechanical reports are single cars, but they're worth knowing. A 2013 car needed a new steering rack, an early 62-plate needed a part inside the steering column to stop a grating noise, and a 2017 car's front wheel vibration at 30 to 40mph was only cured by a new nearside driveshaft after new wheel bearings didn't help. A 2016 1.2 TCe juddered at a steady speed for six months without the dealer sorting it.
Water getting inside has come up more than once. One 65-plate car's carpets were soaked after heavy rain, and a 2013 dCi had a footwell drain bung fitted the wrong way round, along with a front brake caliper that worked loose and a handbrake that wouldn't hold on hills. Press the carpets in every footwell and check the handbrake on a slope before you agree a deal.

Where this Dacia Duster guide comes from
If you used the Honest John car-by-car reviews before the site closed in 2026, this is where the Dacia Duster buying advice now lives. It is written from the archived owner reports and model notes (archived page, 93 items read for this model), our own known-faults database, the confirmed service intervals and the Real MPG figures. Every number on the page comes from that data, not from the text. The same data feeds our free advert check.
