Which used Citroen C3 Aircross should you buy?

The 1.2 PureTech petrol is the lesser risk, not a safe bet: it carries one High known fault where the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel carries two. Its cambelt runs in oil, and on C3 Aircross models up to 2023, worn belt material can block the oil pickup, starving the engine and taking out the brake vacuum pump. The belt's due at 62,000 miles or 72 months and should be checked at every service, so buy one with receipts showing both.

The diesel's two faults are why it comes second. On 2017 to 2022 cars the AdBlue system can fail between 22,000 and 28,500 miles, and because the pump sits inside the tank, the usual repair is a new tank, pump and injector. On 2017 to 2023 cars the 7mm camshaft chain can stretch and snap between 50,000 and 90,000 miles, wrecking the top of the engine. Only take a diesel with paperwork for any AdBlue work and no rattle from up top.

No year of the 2017 to 2024 run stands out on the evidence. Beyond the known faults, the record is a handful of single owners' reports, which is thin rather than clean, so judge each car on its paperwork and how much oil it's using, not on its age or trim.

Which C3 Aircross engines and gearboxes are the safe choices?

The 1.2 PureTech petrol is the lesser risk, but only with proof its wet belt has been changed or checked on time. Belt wear is a High known fault: worn material can break up and block the oil pickup, starving the engine of oil and taking out the brake vacuum pump. The belt's due at 62,000 miles or 72 months, checked at every service, so a PureTech that's skipped services isn't one to gamble on.

One owner who picked up a 2018 1.2 PureTech in January 2019 found it burning a litre of oil every 1,000 miles, so check the level before you commit. Separately, dealers offered an ECU software update on older PureTech 130 engines, so ask whether any update has been carried out and get it in writing.

The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel is the one to be wariest of. Its AdBlue system is a High known fault on 2017 to 2022 cars, and its 7mm camshaft chain is another on 2017 to 2023 cars, snapping between 50,000 and 90,000 miles. It's also got a dry cambelt, which drives the water pump, due at 60,000 miles or 60 months, so ask for that receipt too.

What should you check when viewing a used C3 Aircross?

Pull the dipstick first on a petrol: a level well below the full mark, or a seller who admits to topping it up often, points to oil use that one owner found on a 2018 car. Ask for the invoice showing the wet belt was changed or inspected, and look for services done on time rather than stretched, since the belt sits in that oil. A low oil pressure light, an engine management light or a hard brake pedal points to the belt.

On a diesel, look for an AdBlue or engine management light, or a countdown saying the engine won't restart after so many miles: that's the AdBlue system, and the fix is a new tank, pump and injector. With the bonnet open, listen for ticking or rattling from the top of the engine, which points to the camshaft chain stretching. If that chain lets go, the engine loses power and stops.

Try the heater and demister properly. One 2018 owner found the temperature control stopped responding after using the demist button, leaving the cabin roasting even in freezing weather. Switch demist on and off a few times and check the temperature still changes both ways.

Look at the rear brakes through the wheels: one January 2018 car had corroded rear brakes at just 12,000 miles. On the drive, listen for road noise above 50mph if it's on 17 inch wheels, feel how it copes with a broken surface, since the soft ride can get unsettled, and check you can switch off the lane change assistance and the stop/start.

Paste the advert into the free check and it runs these against the listing, the MOT history and the DVLA record before you travel.

Is a used Citroen C3 Aircross Mk1 (2017 to 2024) worth buying?

Yes, as a 1.2 PureTech petrol with receipts for its wet belt, because the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel carries two High known faults to the petrol's one. It's roomy for its size, with plenty of legroom in the back, though the soft suspension can get unsettled on poor roads and 17-inch wheels bring road noise above 50mph.

The belt fault has no typical mileage on record, so lean on the receipts at 62,000 miles or 72 months and the checks at each service rather than on a low mileage. On a diesel, the AdBlue failure has come between 22,000 and 28,500 miles and the camshaft chain between 50,000 and 90,000, so a diesel in either window needs its paperwork.

The rest of the record is single cars: one 2018 PureTech used a litre of oil every 1,000 miles, one January 2018 car's rear brakes had corroded by 12,000 miles, and one owner's heater got stuck on hot after using the demister. Few reports isn't the same as a clean record, so check each of those on the day.
